Let’s be real—how many of us are running on fumes midweek, feeling like we’re being pulled in a million directions? You start the day with a full cup of energy, only to find it drained by lunchtime. It’s not just about busy schedules; it’s the challenge of treating your energy like it's a never-ending resource. Believe me, I've been there along with many of my clients and colleagues, including some of the most accomplished women I know. But here's what I know for sure: Change is possible.
For years, I wore my Superwoman cape with pride—saying 'yes' to everything and everyone, thinking it was a testament to my strength. But eventually, I hit a wall. The exhaustion, frustration, and the gnawing sense that my efforts weren’t adding up finally led to my breaking point. The truth was hard to swallow; this wasn't strength—it was burnout.
The real shift that changed everything for me was recognizing that time management isn’t the real solution here. Time means nothing if you don’t have the energy to show up fully. I learned to invest my energy—that is, my most precious currency—in what matters most. This is what I call “high ROI living.”
Studies reveal that those who focus their energy on intentional and meaningful tasks aren’t just more productive; they’re happier and far less likely to face burnout. Imagine the impact of directing your energy toward tasks that truly matter. But how do we get there? It starts with an energy audit—a game-changer that helps you identify where your energy is currently going.
Write it down. Take a day to jot down where your energy goes. Every single task, project, or conversation. Be honest with yourself—scroll time counts too.
Categorize it. Divide your tasks into two buckets: high return, which are tasks that align with your values, and low return, which drain you and feel pointless.
Identify patterns. Look for one or two major drains on your energy. Remember, small shifts can create significant momentum.
Start your day with intention. Set a priority that reflects your values before diving into emails or meetings.
Learn to say no wisely. Every 'yes' to something insignificant is a 'no' to something meaningful. Create intentional pauses before you commit.
Align tasks with peak energy times. Tackle what’s most important during your high energy hours, leaving the less critical for later.
Protect your recharge zones. Treat activities that rejuvenate—be it exercise or quiet reflection—as non-negotiable meetings with yourself.
One of the most powerful lessons I've learned is the importance of energy rituals to build reserves. Whether it's a morning routine or a midday reset, find what fills your cup proactively. We cannot thrive when we pour from an empty cup.
